Nikola Jokic...best 2nd round pick ever? (Benjamin Joseph)

The Serbian big man Nikola Jokic wasn’t a household name when he got drafted by the Denver Nuggets back in 2014. Quite frankly most fans didn’t even know what he looked like when the 41st overall pick of the 2nd round was selected. This is because ESPN aired a Taco Bell commercial when the pick was announced! At the time, there weren’t an abundance of european athletes in the NBA with most of them fitting the mold of one of two athletes, either a crafty guard or an extremely large big man who had some shooting ability. Jokic fit the mold of the latter, but not in the best ways. He stood 6 '11 which wasn't overly tall for his position, but was considered oversized in weight and deemed a bottom-tier athlete. He also could shoot a bit but wasn’t considered one of the better stretch bigs in his class. Though with the help of his large wingspan and supposed great basketball IQ, there was hope he could be a serviceable backup center in the league. A direct quote from a scouting report made about Jokic was, “Unfortunately, his defense will likely prevent him from ever playing 30-plus minutes or starting. However, there's no shame in being a respectable reserve on a winning team in the future.” (Daniel O’Brien, Bleacher Report). But what happened next came to everyone's surprise as Jokic played well when given minutes and earned more and more.

By his second season he was averaging nearly 17 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists a game, budding into a star big man in the league. By his 3rd season with the Nuggets he became a full time starter and was considered one of the best centers in the game. The Nuggets showed good faith to their star and signed him to a 5 year extension worth 147 million total. After this he started to receive accolades for his stellar play, becoming an all star in the 2018-2019 season and continuing to be one every year since. In the 20/21 season he took his game to a new level and won MVP of the league, and when you thought he couldn’t get better, repeated in the 21/22 season. The Nuggets most recently rewarded their top 5 player in the league with a brand new supermax extension worth 5 years and 272 million, and he has shown no signs of slowing down with the current MVP polls ranking him at the favorite to win another MVP award, which would make it 3 consecutive years for the Serbian.

The story of Jokic is quite frankly a phenomenal one, going from second round pick who literally nobody knew about to one of the best centers of all time. It couples a recent increase in European athletes coming into the NBA and dominating the league with other stars such as Luka, Giannis, and Kristaps Porzingis.

One must question how these European prospects coming into the NBA and having so much success, especially when scouting them can be so difficult due to the limited minutes they play in European leagues. When you look at the draft profiles for some of these international draft prospect you will oftentimes see them averaging under 15 minutes played per game, less than 10 points per game, and at first glance, most don’t see why they are touted to be a high prospect. But I believe this is why these scouts are paid the big bucks to research athletes overseas because their training regime from childhood is simply different from those of kids raised in America. These top prospects will start playing professional basketball at age 15 or 16 with grown adults that are the best basketball players in their respective countries. That is why these guys may not get more than 15 minutes a game, because a 16 year old has no shot to be able to compete for 30 minutes against 25+ year olds. But they practice against them day in and day out, where their skills and raw tools are put on display. The stigma against European athletes is that they are always raw prospects coming in, that need to be developed in America. But with the likes of guys like Jokic, or Luka Doncic, one must wonder how long this stigma will continue with these athletes' ability to produce at the highest level quickly. I believe it will be interesting to see how long Jokic continues to dominate the NBA and how many more of his European counterparts come in and continue to have success in this world's best basketball league.

Giannis Antetokounmpo: A Global Superstar (Arielle Bloom)

International basketball players have had great success within the NBA. One example of a global superstar who made his name known is Giannis Antetokounmpo. Giannis, a 6 foot 11 inch player, who comes from Athens Greece, currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks. Giannis entered the NBA at just the age of 18, and quickly gained popularity. His country of origin, height, and skills have influenced his nickname, “The Greek Freak.” He was selected as number 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft and advanced his career being recognized among the top 75 elite players in the league, and achieving back-to-back Kia MVP honors in 2019 and 2020. His numerous accomplishments led him to his first championship title in 2021 against the Phoenix Suns. His performance in this game was like nothing before seen with 40 points in Game 2, and 50 points in Game 6. He was then given finals MVP.

Giannis’s Antetokounmpo is an inspiration to any European player aspiring to play in the NBA. His development from a skinny and shy European player with enormous potential to a global icon really opens the door for all players outside the US with dreams like his. Players like Giannis in the NBA have not only shown that Europeans can take center stage in a predominantly saturated American market, but that they can be some of the very best in the league.

Giannis has demonstrated that European players can become dominant forces in the NBA. Prior to Giannis, there were very few European players who were seen as true superstars in the league. However, Giannis has shown that European players can not only compete at the highest level, but also become some of the best players in the world. His superstardom garners admiration from fans all over the world and his success has encouraged more NBA teams to take chances on European prospects. Giannis has proven that hard work and perseverance will help overcome difficult situations. Giannis grew up in Greece living in extreme poverty. In the beginning of his career he had to share his playing shoes with his brother, Thanasis. He faced significant challenges early in his career from his language barrier and lack of experience. However, through his hard work and determination he became one of the best NBA players. This shines a light on not only players coming from Greece, but any international player, to take a risk and believe that they can overcome their obstacles to achieve their dreams.

Giannis inspires loyalty everyday through his dedication to a single team/small franchise like the Milwaukee Bucks. Regardless of his successes, and rewards, he has stayed loyal to his team that drafted him back in 2013. This dedication inspires fans and other players to strive for this loyalty in a sport where player movement/trade is pretty common.

Overall, Giannis Antetokounmpo is an amazing example of how a European player can make such an impact in the NBA, among a predominantly American market.

Victor Wembanyama - The best draft prospect since Lebron James (Ari Geller)

Incoming draft prospect Victor Wembanyama is an 18 year old French basketball player who is projected to be the number one pick in the upcoming 2023 NBA draft. Wembanyama stands at 7-foot-4 with an 8 foot wingspan. This makes any basketball fan think that he would be like any other freakishly tall player, however, Wembanyama is able to move just like any other guard in the league very effectively even at his size. This is what makes him the best draft prospect since Lebron James entered the league 20 years ago.

Currently, Wembenyama plays for Metropolitan 92 in the LNB Pro A in France. Following this year he will be looking to make his way over to the United States to join the NBA and will be looked at as the finishing touch of the global takeover of the NBA.

Wembanyama’s style of play is shocking and extremely entertaining to watch because there are not many people we have ever seen that are able to do what he does. There is not a single thing on the basketball court that he is unable to do. He can finish at the rim, shoot, dribble and defend which may be his best attribute of all. In scouting reports, Wemby draws comparisons to Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Rudy Gobert but all in one single player.

The hype for Wemby really started back in October when the Metropolitan 92 traveled to Las Vegas to take on the G League Ignite in two exhibition games. This was the first time Wembanyama was able to really showcase his skills in the United States and he did not disappoint. Over the span of the two games he managed to drop 73 points. His skills were explained best when Lebron James commented on Wembanyama in a press conference saying, “Everybody’s been a unicorn over the last few years, but he’s more like an alien. No one has ever seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and graceful as he is on the floor.”

The big question is, what happens to the league when a prospect this good is entering the draft? We are starting to see teams purposely lose games to try to get the best odds possible for the number one overall pick. However, the tanking is done in a way where it is not obvious, such as the worse teams playing their better players less. When the idea of many teams tanking this season was brought to NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s attention he said, “I know that many of our NBA teams are salivating at the notion that potentially through our lottery, they can get him, so they should all still compete very hard next season.” Wembenyama is already having an effect on the standings of the NBA without even being drafted yet so it is clear that he will become a serious star in the league and possibly become one of the best European players ever.

Trusting the Process- Joel Embiid (Harrison Ruff)

Joel Embiid started playing basketball only at 15 years old. Only 15 years old!

Originating from Cameroon, Joel Embiid was surrounded by a community that prioritized soccer as the main sport. It is known that there is not the so-called “golden ticket” out of Cameroon through basketball. He started playing volleyball due to the fact that he was over 6 foot 10 inches but then became fascinated with basketball. He became inspired by Hakeem Olajowin and fell in love with basketball.

Just by chance at a basketball camp in Cameroon in 2011, Luc Mbah a Moute, an NBA player discovered Joel Embiid. He moved to Florida at Montverde Academy and it wasn’t an easy transition for him. The only English he knew was “Good Morning.”He was able to attend Kansas where he became a top ranked recruit. He eventually declared for the NBA draft. Arthur Embiid, his 13 year old younger brother, wanted to watch him make his debut but he couldn’t since Joel got hurt. In between his actual debut and the draft, his brother was killed in a car crash.

Now, Joel is a 6x NBA all star, NBA Scoring Champion, and the face of the Philadelphia 76ers. His journey to becoming one of the all time greats exemplifies how anything is possible with hard work, determination, and perseverance. With his recent profound success we question why America isn’t following a better scouting process for these hidden gems. We have never seen a greater influx of European superstars dominating the NBA. It is astonishing that the top 10 NBA players consist of at least 5 global superstars. From the Dream Team in 1992, we see how the game has expanded, and we need to continue to embrace this great trend. Each player that has made his way to their franchises have permanently changed the trajectory of the team for the foreseeable future.

His profound impact on the 76ers in terms of rankings in the NBA and Philadelhia’s market is impeccable. In 2014, the 76ers were valued at $469 million, and now they are worth $3.15 billion dollars. The cornerstone and face of the franchise is one of the main reasons for this tremendous growth. Not only has Joel helped build and expand the 76ers, he has built meaningful connections with all people in the 76ers community.

Since being with the 76ers family, Joel has created a profound connection with the community. When times get hard, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Joel pledged over $500,000 to help all employees that are part of the organization. The way in which Luc Mbah a Moute found Joel Embiid gives hope to many young people from Africa to become an inspiration as Joel Embiid. Cameroon borned and raised leaves millions of young children with the hope they can be the next icon. The NBA needs to continue embracing the European route of bringing in superstars and changing all franchises going forward. The past AAU route is starting to get old and European superstars are taking over fast and they are not looking back. What we can learn from Joel Embiid’s journey is to trust the process.

How has European basketball player Luka Doncic affected the National Basketball Association? - Adam Moss

Luka Doncic was born in Ljubljana, and started his basketball career playing for Union Olimpija before he was able to join the youth basketball academy of Real madrid at a young age. He made his debut at a young age being 16 years old. This was considered the youngest age the club has ever seen. As a young teenager, he led his team to the Euroleague championship, winning MVP and final four MVP. A young Luka doncic, was on pace to do great things but never could have imagined what he would do in the NBA.

Since Luka Doncic debuted in the 2018-2019 season, he has had an unbelievable impact on the NBA and the European world. He has not only gauged more international interest, but also has raised the bar when it comes to European’s playing in the United States. Doncic’ success in the NBA has helped raise the profile of the NBA in Europe as well.

Doncic has proved to fans around the world and sports analysts that Europeans can compete at the highest level of basketball, while also having the potential of being one of the bests in the league. Thanks to Luka Doncic, he has opened up many new opportunities for European players to become successful in the NBA.

Luka has also been successful with single handedly generating more profits for the NBA. Examples like merchandise sales, increased ratings, and most importantly international expansion has boosted the NBA’s ratings due to his success.

The season right before Luka entered the league, the NBA profits came out to roughly eight billion dollars. Now, fast forward multiple years, as Luka’s success has emerged, as well as many other European players, the NBA now makes roughly 10 Billion dollars as of 2022.

To get into the specifics on viewership from Europeans, I found that after the 2021 season, due to players like Luka Doncic, Giannis, and Nikola Jokic, the NBA’s viewership in multiple continents has increased about 15 percent in NBA League Pass subscriptions internationally. This makes games available to people in over 200 countries. These European basketball players, Luka Doncic specifically, are changing the NBA and increasing their viewership tremendously.

Overall, Luka Doncic has made a tremendous impact on the NBA and European basketball players. Ever since he entered the league and started his successful career, more and more European fans and players have been tuning in to watch the NBA and joining the league as a whole. Fans all over the world are watching Luka do his magic on the court each and every time he steps on there. As you can see, ratings have gone up, the NBA has profited more, and more and more people are starting to realize that European basketball players are more then on their way to taking over the NBA.
